Diagnostics of SQL Server in SQL Server Management Studio
The new module provides additional benefits to customers who do not have high-level support from Microsoft.
Microsoft is constantly releasing new products and plug-ins for SQL Server, continuing to actively explore the territory of Linux and maintaining leadership in the field of cloud data thanks to SQL Azure database and storage Azure SQL Warehouse. The newest product we will talk about is an additional diagnostic module for SQL Server environment SQL Server Management Studio.
SQL Server Diagnostic Module
The preliminary version of the add-on is announced in the MSSQL Tiger Team journal. It can be downloaded from www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=55516, and if you have several Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) installations, the download process will take this into account and install the add-on for all SSMS instances on your workstation (screen 1).

Using this module, you can transfer a dump file for evaluation and in return get knowledge base articles directly related to the dump content. For example, you can create a mini dump using the syntax of the following command to get the dump file in the SQL Server log directory:
DBCC TRACEON (2546, -1);
GO
DBCC STACKDUMP;
After that you can call an additional module from the Tools section of the SSMS menu bar (screen 2) and fill in the form shown on screen 3.

The memory dump provided is analyzed to find the main cause of the failure and knowledge base articles corresponding to the problems found in the dump file. Customers using this tool can debug and apply the solutions themselves through Microsoft’s feedback and knowledge base articles. Passed dumps are saved as if they were provided as part of Microsoft’s standard support process. Information about the policy and process can be found in the Microsoft Privacy Policy at privacy.microsoft.com.

You will be able to pass on information about connecting Connect items from this form, as well as further simplify the process to log problems for review by Microsoft’s SQL Server Program Group specialists.
Specifications and technical recommendations
To install the add-on you need the version SQL Server Management Studio 2016 or newer. The process will work for all supported versions of Microsoft SQL Server (for today SQL Server 2008 and later).
This process will work with mini-dumps, full dumps and filtered dumps of any size up to 100 Gbytes. Microsoft Tiger Team experts recommend sending any dumps larger than 8 Gbytes after compression using the LZ4 algorithm.
The new extension module provides additional benefits to customers that do not have high-level support from Microsoft. It provides information from existing knowledge base articles, but eliminates the time-consuming discovery process. In addition, it simplifies troubleshooting SQL Server in companies that do not have on staff highly skilled professionals. As a result, the support structure reduces the volume of low-level traffic and support channels Microsoft are released to serve customers who need special attention or face more complex problems.
