ISNULL SQL Server function
The ISNULL SQL Server function checks the value of some expression. If it is NULL, the function returns a value which is passed as the second parameter: ISNULL(expression, value).
Syntax of ISNULL function in SQL Server (Transact-SQL)
ISNULL( expression, alternative_value )
- expression is a value to check if it is NULL.
- alternative_value – value returned if it is NULL.
Note:
- The ISNULL function returns alternative_value if it is NULL
- The function ISNULL returns an expression if the expression NOT NULL.
The ISNULL function can be used in the following versions of SQL Server (Transact-SQL):
SQL Server vNext, SQL Server 2016, SQL Server 2015, SQL Server 2014, SQL Server 2012, SQL Server 2008 R2, SQL Server 2008, SQL Server 2005
For example, take the table created above and apply the ISNULL function to obtain data:
SELECT FirstName, LastName,
ISNULL(Phone, 'not defined') AS Phone,
ISNULL(Email, 'unknown') AS Email
FROM Clients
