Oracle COALESCE function
Oracle PL SQL function COALESCE returns the first non-zero expression from the list. If all expressions are defined as Null, the COALESCE function will return Null.
Oracle PL/SQL syntax of COALESCE function
COALESCE( expr1_id, expr2_id, ... expr_n_id )
Parameters or arguments
- expr1_id , expr2_id … expr_n_id – expressions to check for the value Not Null.
The COALESCE function returns any data type, such as string, number, date, etc. (but all expressions must have the same data type in COALESCE).
If all expressions do not match the data type, ORA-00932 error will be returned.

Let us consider an example of using COALESCE function in Oracle PLSQL.
For example:
SELECT COALESCE( address1, address2, address3 )
FROM suppls;
The above function COALESCE is equivalent to the conditional operator IF-THEN-ELSE:
IF address1 is not null THEN
result := address1;
ELSIF address2 is not null THEN
result := address2;
ELSIF address3 is not null THEN
result := address3;
ELSE
result := null;
END IF;
The COALESCE function will compare each value, one after the other.
