Oracle CUME_DIST function

9 July 2020

Oracle CUME_DIST function

Oracle/PLSQL CUME_DIST function returns the cumulative distribution of values in the value group. The CUME_DIST function will return a value that is > 0 and <= 1. You can use CUME_DIST in two ways – as an aggregate function or as an analytical function.

Syntax #1 of function CUME_DIST – used as an aggregate function

As an aggregate function, the function CUME_DIST returns the relative position of a string in a string group.

Syntax for function CUME_DIST when used as an aggregate function:

CUME_DIST( expression1_id, ... expression_n_id ) WITHIN GROUP ( ORDER BY expression1_id, ... expression_n_id )

where:

  • expression1_id … expression_n_id – there can be one or more expressions that identify a unique string in the group

Note:
The CUME_DIST function returns a numeric value.
The number of expressions in the first list of expressions must be the same as in the ORDER BY operator.
The list of expressions, positions and data types in the first list must be the same as in ORDER BY operator.

Application:
You can use the CUME_DIST function in the following versions of Oracle/PLSQL:

Oracle 12c, Oracle 11g, Oracle 10g, Oracle 9i

Let’s consider an example of the CUME_DIST function to understand how to use the CUME_DIST function in Oracle/PLSQL.

select CUME_DIST(1000, 500) WITHIN GROUP (ORDER BY salary_id, bonus_id)
from empls;

The SQL query will return the cumulative distribution of employees with a salary of $1000 and a bonus of $500 from the employees table.

Syntax № 2 of the function CUME_DIST – used as an analytical function

As an analytical function, the CUME_DIST function returns the relative position of a value in a group of values.

Syntax of the function CUME_DIST when used as an analytical function:

CUME_DIST() OVER ([ query_partition_clause_id] ORDER BY clause_id )

The CUME_DIST function returns a numeric value.

Application:
You can use the CUME_DIST function in the following versions of Oracle/PLSQL:

Oracle 12c, Oracle 11g, Oracle 10g, Oracle 9i, Oracle 8i

Example (as an analytic function)

select empl_name, salary_id,
CUME_DIST() OVER (PARTITION BY depart ORDER BY salary_id)
from empls
where depart = 'Marketing';

The SQL query will return the salary percentage for each employee to the depart – ‘Marketing’.
