Oracle LISTAGG function
Oracle/PLSQL LISTAGG function combines measure_column values for each group based on order_by_clause.
Oracle/PLSQL syntax of LISTAGG function
LISTAGG (measure_column_id [, 'delimiter_id']).
WITHIN GROUP (order_by_clause_id) [OVER query_partition_clause_id]
Parameters or arguments
- measure_column_id – the column whose values you want to combine together in a set of results. Zero values in measure_column are ignored.
- delimiter_id – is not mandatory. This delimiter is used when separating measure_column values when outputting results.
- order_by_clause_id – defines the order of related values (i.e.: measure_column) which are returned.
The LISTAGG function returns a string value.
LISTAGG function can be used in Oracle/PLSQL versions
Oracle 12c, Oracle 11g Release 2
The LISTAGG function can be used in Oracle/PLSQL
Since this is a more complex function, to understand it, let’s look at an example that includes the data that the function demonstrates at the output.
If you have a product table with the following data:
PROD_id | PROD_NAME |
---|---|
1001 | Bananas |
1002 | Apples |
1003 | Pears |
1004 | Oranges |
And you will execute the next SQL query using the LISTAGG function:
SELECT LISTAGG(prod_name, ', ') WITHIN GROUP (ORDER BY prod_name) "Product_Listing_id".
FROM prods;
You’ll get the next result:
Prod_Listing |
---|
Apples, Bananas, Oranges, Pears |
In this example, the result of the LISTAGG function will be displayed in the same field with comma-separated values.
You can change the sorting using the DESC keyword and modify the SELECT query as follows:
SELECT LISTAGG(prod_name, ', ') WITHIN GROUP (ORDER BY prod_name DESC) "Prod_Listing".
FROM prods;
We’ll get the next result:
Prod_Listing |
---|
Pears, Oranges, Bananas, Apples |
You can change the semicolon separator as follows:
SELECT LISTAGG(prod_name, '; ') WITHIN GROUP (ORDER BY prod_name DESC) "Prod_Listing".
FROM prods;
These changes will be expressed as follows:
Prod_Listing |
---|
Pears; Oranges; Bananas; Apples |
