SQL condition AND
SQL condition AND (also known as SQL AND operator) is used to check two or more conditions in a SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE or DELETE operator. All conditions must be met to select a record.
Syntax for AND condition in SQL
WHERE cond1
AND cond2
…
AND cond_n;
where:
- cond1, cond2,… cond_n – Several conditions that will be checked for each record. All conditions must be met to be included in the result set.
Using AND condition with SELECT operator
Let’s look at an example that shows how to use the AND condition in a SELECT statement to check two conditions that must be met to select records.
In this example, we have a table with the following data:
custom_id | f_name | l_name | fav_website |
---|---|---|---|
4000 | Justin | Bieber | google.com |
5000 | Selena | Gomez | bing.com |
6000 | Mila | Kunis | yahoo.com |
7000 | Tom | Cruise | oracle.com |
8000 | Johnny | Depp | NULL |
9000 | Russell | Crowe | google.com |
Now let’s demonstrate how to use the AND condition. Enter the following SELECT operator:
SELECT *
FROM customs
WHERE fav_website = 'google.com'.
AND custom_id > 6000
ORDER BY l_name;
1 entry will be selected. Here are the results that you will get:
custom_id | f_name | l_name | fav_website |
---|---|---|---|
9000 | Russell | Crowe | google.com |
In this example, all table entries for which fav_website is google.com and custom_id is more than 6000 will be returned. Since SELECT SQL statement uses *, all fields from customers table will be displayed in result set.
Using AND condition with UPDATE operator
Now consider an example of using the AND condition in the UPDATE operator. This will check for multiple conditions before updating the record.
In this example, we have a table with the following data:
suppl_id | suppl_name | city_id | state_id |
---|---|---|---|
100 | Yandex | Moscow | Moscow |
200 | Lansing | Michigan | |
300 | Oracle | Redwood City | California |
400 | Bing | Redmond | Washington |
500 | Yahoo | Sunnyvale | Washington |
600 | DuckDuckGo | Paoli | Pennsylvania |
700 | Qwant | Paris | Ile de France |
800 | Menlo Park | California | |
900 | Electronic Arts | San Francisco | California |
Enter the following UPDATE operator:
UPDATE suppls
SET suppl_name = 'SaaS'
WHERE city_id = 'Redwood City'
AND suppl_id <> 900;
1 record will be updated. Select data from the table again:
suppl_id | suppl_name | city_id | state_id |
---|---|---|---|
100 | Yandex | Moscow | Moscow |
200 | Lansing | Michigan | |
300 | SaaS | Redwood City | California |
400 | Bing | Redmond | Washington |
500 | Yahoo | Sunnyvale | Washington |
600 | DuckDuckGo | Paoli | Pennsylvania |
700 | Qwant | Paris | Ile de France |
800 | Menlo Park | California | |
900 | Electronic Arts | San Francisco | California |
In this example, all suppl_name values in the suppliers table will be updated to SaaS, where Redwood City was the city and suppl_id was not 900. As can be seen, suppl_name has been updated in the third line.
Using AND condition with DELETE operator
Now let’s look at how to use the AND condition in a DELETE statement to check 2 conditions that must be met before a record can be deleted.
In this example, we have a product table with the following data:
prod_id | prod_name | cat_id |
---|---|---|
1 | Pear | 50 |
2 | Banana | 50 |
3 | Orange | 50 |
4 | Apple | 50 |
5 | Bread | 75 |
6 | Sliced Ham | 25 |
7 | Kleenex | NULL |
Enter the following DELETE operator:
DELETE FROM prods
WHERE cat_id = 50
AND prod_name <> 'Pear';
3 records will be deleted. Select the data from the products table again:
SELECT *
FROM prods;
Here are the results you’ll get:
prod_id | prod_name | cat_id |
---|---|---|
1 | Pear | 50 |
5 | Bread | 75 |
6 | Sliced Ham | 25 |
7 | Kleenex | NULL |
In this example, all the records from the prods table with cat_id 50 and prod_name not ‘Pear’ are removed.
